We have known this heavy metal was deadly for over two millennia

Why is Lead Bad For Humans? · 4:19 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Humans have been mining lead since roughly 6500 BCE, yet its toxic nature is not a modern discovery. Even ancient physicians recognized its devastating power to cripple the human body, a warning that remains critically relevant as we face global health challenges today.

While lead is a naturally occurring element in the Earth's crust, its widespread industrial use has created a global public health crisis. The metal is distributed throughout the body, targeting the brain, liver, and kidneys. Crucially, it accumulates in the teeth and bones, where it can remain stored for long periods. This storage creates a hidden danger: during pregnancy, lead released from a person's bones can enter the bloodstream, directly exposing the developing fetus to toxic effects.

The physiological impact varies by age, but no level of exposure is considered safe. Young children are especially at risk, as they can absorb up to five times more lead than adults from an ingested dose. Their natural behaviors, such as frequent hand-to-mouth contact or pica—the consumption of non-food items—increase their contact with contaminated dust and soil. Severe exposure in children can lead to convulsions, coma, or permanent intellectual and behavioral disabilities.

In adults, the damage often manifests as chronic conditions, including kidney damage and increased risks of high blood pressure and cardiovascular issues. In fact, in 2023, lead exposure was linked to over 3.5 million deaths worldwide, largely due to these cardiovascular complications. Exposure occurs through various routes, including inhaling particles from smelting or stripping paint, and ingesting contaminated water or food. Despite the heavy presence of lead in batteries, pigments, and plumbing, these health impacts are entirely preventable.
