Language is not just a tool, but our collective legacy
In short: Language creator David Peterson explores why our ability to communicate is humanity's most profound invention. Watch to see how studying and inventing languages reveals our shared identity and the mechanics of human expression.
Peterson argues that civilization itself is built upon the foundation of language. Rather than being a simple utility for exchanging information, language serves as the primary vessel for conveying what it means to be human.
The talk provides a unique perspective on linguistic creation, featuring a lesson on High Valyrian—one of the two languages Peterson developed for the Game of Thrones series. By examining both the preservation of existing tongues and the invention of new ones, we gain a deeper understanding of our collective humanity.
