Why nearly every American has toxic 'forever chemicals' circulating in their bloodstream today

Why Toxic "Forever Chemicals" are in the Blood of Most Americans · 6:51 · Video: NOVA PBS Official · Watch at the source

In short: Known as PFAS, these synthetic compounds are so pervasive that an estimated 98% of the U.S. population carries them in their blood. Engineered for extreme durability, they resist natural breakdown, accumulating in our bodies and water supplies. We are only now beginning to understand the true cost of this chemical legacy.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, have been manufactured since the 1940s. Their utility stems from an exceptionally strong carbon-fluorine bond, which grants them non-stick, waterproof, and stain-resistant properties. These attributes make them essential in everything from firefighting foams and nonstick cookware to cosmetics, dental floss, and food packaging. However, this same chemical strength makes them nearly impossible to destroy, allowing them to persist in the environment for decades or even thousands of years.

The contamination is widespread. PFAS leach from consumer products into landfills, wastewater, and eventually into rivers, streams, and groundwater. Agricultural biosolids used as fertilizer create another pathway into our food supply. Estimates suggest that up to 14,000 individual PFAS compounds exist, yet we have little understanding of the toxicity of most of them. While the EPA has begun to set limits on certain chemicals, these regulations represent only the tip of the iceberg, as public water systems struggle with the high costs of treatment and the challenge of disposing of contaminated waste.

The health implications are significant and multifaceted. Research links PFAS exposure to a range of serious conditions, including kidney, testicular, and liver cancers, as well as thyroid disease, obesity, and reduced immune response. Unlike many other contaminants, PFAS are not easily metabolized; they accumulate in human tissues, particularly in the blood, liver, and kidneys. Because no safe level of exposure has been identified, the presence of these chemicals in our daily lives remains a critical, ongoing public health concern.
