In short: Founded in the 14th century, Yarsanism is a syncretic, esoteric religion centered on the belief that the Divine Essence manifests in human form across successive epochs. Often misunderstood and historically forced to hide their identity, its followers navigate a world governed by internal rules hidden from the external eye.

Yarsanism, also known as Ahl-e Haqq or Kaka'i, emerged in western Iran during the late 14th century under the guidance of Sultan Sahak. The faith posits that the universe operates through two distinct realms: the internal, or bātinī, and the external, or zāhirī. While humans perceive only the outer world, their existence is governed by the hidden order of the inner realm. This framework is deeply rooted in Kurdish esotericism, heavily influenced by Sufi batiniyya traditions.

Central to Yarsani belief is the concept of mazhariyyat, or the successive manifestation of the Divine Essence in human form. Followers believe history unfolds in epochs, each marked by a primary manifestation. The First Epoch was led by Khawandagar, the Second by Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Third by Shah Khoshin, and the Fourth by Sultan Sahak. Each epoch also features the Haft Tan, or Seven Persons—archangels who oversee the affairs of the inner realm. This structure reflects a complex theology of emanationism and incarnationism, distinct from mainstream Islamic practice.

The community’s religious life is anchored in the Kalâm-e Saranjâm, a collection of sacred poetry and narratives primarily written in the Gorani language. Because Yarsanis often face social stigma—sometimes being disparagingly labeled as Ali-Allahi, or 'worshipers of Ali'—many maintain a low profile. The faith is organized into eleven spiritual houses, or Khandans, each led by a hereditary say-yed. These leaders are the sole custodians of the religion's sacred texts, guiding followers who are united by a shared commitment to the teachings of Sultan Sahak, regardless of their diverse linguistic backgrounds in Kurdish, Turkic, or Arabic.
