The first Canadian artist to win a Grammy for Best New Artist
In short: From uploading acoustic covers on YouTube at thirteen to becoming a Grammy winner, Alessia Cara navigated a unique path to stardom. Her journey highlights the power of independent branding, culminating in a historic milestone as the first Canadian to earn the Best New Artist title in 2018.
In 2014, Alessia Caracciolo signed with EP Entertainment and Def Jam Recordings after building a following by posting acoustic covers on YouTube. Her debut single, "Here," released in April 2015, became a sleeper hit in the United States, eventually peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Cara's trajectory was marked by significant milestones, including her 2018 Grammy win for Best New Artist. This achievement made her the first Canadian artist to ever receive the honor, though the win sparked intense online backlash, leading Cara to briefly deactivate her social media accounts due to hateful messages and death threats from fans of another artist.
Beyond the charts, Cara has established a diverse portfolio of collaborations and creative projects. She has worked with high-profile producers like Zedd and collaborated with artists such as Khalid, Logic, and Juanes. Her work also extends into voice acting and film, including a role in the Netflix animated movie "The Willoughbys" and providing the theme song for "Blade Runner: Black Lotus."
Critically, her third studio album, "In the Meantime" (2021), was praised for its introspective and vulnerable lyricism. She continues to balance commercial success with philanthropy, such as pledging all proceeds from her "This Summer: Live Off The Floor" EP for the next 21 years to Save The Children.
