From Bill S. Preston to documentarian, Alex Winter’s career defies easy categorization.
In short: Best known as one half of the iconic duo in Bill & Ted, Alex Winter has spent decades quietly building a prolific career as a filmmaker. Beyond his acting, he has become a respected documentarian, tackling complex subjects like digital privacy, corruption, and the life of Frank Zappa.
Born in London in 1965 to parents involved in modern dance, Alex Winter began his professional acting career at age ten. His early years were defined by Broadway roles in productions like The King and I and Peter Pan. While studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he made his feature film debut in 1985’s Death Wish 3. He eventually left school to pursue acting, landing a role in The Lost Boys before achieving international fame in 1989 as Bill S. Preston, Esq. in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. This role, which he reprised in 1991 and 2020, became a cornerstone of his public identity.
Winter’s creative trajectory shifted significantly toward filmmaking in the 1990s. After directing the sketch comedy series The Idiot Box, he co-wrote and starred in the 1993 film Freaked. Though it was not a commercial success at the time, it later gained a cult following. His directorial work evolved to focus on documentaries that explore the intersection of technology, society, and power. Notable projects include 2015’s Deep Web, 2018’s The Panama Papers, and 2022’s The YouTube Effect. His 2020 documentary Zappa was particularly significant, as it was the first to gain access to the musician’s personal archives and became the highest-funded documentary in crowdfunding history via Kickstarter.
Beyond his filmography, Winter has become an outspoken advocate for digital privacy and social justice. His interest in online communities dates back to the 1980s, and he has since used his platform to critique the influence of major tech companies. In 2025, he helped initiate the Tesla Takedown movement, a series of protests aimed at Elon Musk. Simultaneously, he has remained active in the arts, returning to Broadway in 2026 for a revival of Waiting for Godot. Winter’s career reflects a persistent drive to explore the mechanisms of modern culture, whether through the lens of a surrealist comedy or a rigorous investigative documentary.
