How a girl from a Rio neighborhood became the first Brazilian to lead global charts.
In short: Larissa de Macedo Machado, known globally as Anitta, transformed from a local funk singer into an international powerhouse. By blending pop, reggaeton, and electronic sounds, she shattered barriers, becoming the first Brazilian artist to top global music rankings and securing her place as a modern icon of Latin music.
Born in 1993 in Honório Gurgel, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Anitta began her musical journey in a church choir at age eight. Her professional career took off in 2011 after she caught the attention of producer Renato Azevedo. By 2013, she had signed with Warner Music Brasil, releasing a self-titled debut album that quickly achieved platinum status. Her early success was defined by hits like 'Show das Poderosas', which dominated Brazilian airwaves and YouTube, signaling the start of her rapid ascent.
Anitta’s international breakthrough arrived with her 2022 album, Versions of Me. The lead single, 'Envolver', made history by reaching the top spot on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and securing the second position on the Billboard Global 200. This achievement marked the first time a Brazilian artist had led a global music chart. Her influence extends beyond music; she has been recognized for her advocacy in areas ranging from environmental conservation to LGBTQ rights, and she even successfully challenged the dictionary definition of the Portuguese word for 'female boss' to better reflect gender equality.
Beyond her chart-topping success, Anitta is a savvy entrepreneur and polyglot who speaks Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, and French. She has navigated the music industry by founding her own management company and collaborating with global stars like Cardi B, Madonna, and J Balvin. Her career is marked by a relentless pursuit of versatility, moving seamlessly between genres and languages, which has earned her multiple MTV Video Music Awards and Grammy nominations. Today, she remains a defining figure in contemporary pop, bridging the gap between Brazilian funk and the global stage.
