How a Colombian singer redefined the term 'Bichota' to empower women worldwide
In short: Karol G transformed from a struggling artist told she could not succeed in reggaetón to a global icon. By reclaiming a slang term to represent independence and control, she has shattered industry records, topped international charts, and become the first woman to win the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album.
Born Carolina Giraldo Navarro in Medellín, Karol G faced early skepticism from the industry. When she traveled to Miami to meet with Universal Records, the label declined to sign her, suggesting that women could not find success in the male-dominated reggaetón genre. Undeterred, she and her father promoted her career independently, touring colleges and clubs across Colombia. This period of grassroots growth eventually led to her signing with Universal Music Latino in 2016, setting the stage for her breakthrough.
Her rise to prominence was marked by a series of high-profile collaborations and stylistic shifts. Her 2017 debut album, Unstoppable, established her as a standout act in the global urban pop wave. By 2023, she achieved a historic milestone with her fourth album, Mañana Será Bonito, which became the first Spanish-language record by a female artist to reach the top spot on the US Billboard 200. Her artistic evolution continued into 2024, when she received her first Grammy Award for the Música Urbana Album category.
Beyond the charts, Karol G has cultivated a distinct public persona. She redefined the moniker 'La Bichota'—originally a slang term—to signify a powerful, self-determined woman. This ethos extends to her fashion and creative choices, which prioritize a sex-positive, confident image over traditional tropes. Her influence is now global, spanning from her 2026 Coachella headlining set to her collaborations with artists like Shakira and her ventures into genres like merengue, salsa, and vallenato, cementing her status as a cultural force.
