The boy band member who chose a solo path over a reunion
In short: In 2011, a major pop group announced a high-profile reunion. One of its most recognizable members, Ashley Parker Angel, shocked the industry by declining to join. While his former bandmates returned to the spotlight, Angel chose a different trajectory, trading teen-pop stardom for a career in musical theater and songwriting.
Ashley Parker Angel first rose to fame in 2000 through the ABC reality series 'Making the Band.' The show was a television milestone, marking the first time a reality program was picked up by a major network. From tens of thousands of auditionees, Angel was selected as one of the 'final five' members of O-Town. The group achieved immediate, record-breaking success under Clive Davis's J Records. Their debut album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard chart, and their first single, 'Liquid Dreams,' reached No. 1 on the SoundScan singles chart, selling over 42,000 units in a single week.
The group's commercial peak was marked by several historical firsts. O-Town became the first artist in SoundScan history to have their debut single enter at No. 1, an achievement later recorded in the 2002 Guinness Book of World Records. However, as the teen-pop genre began to fade, the group struggled to replicate their initial market impact with their second album, 'O2.' By November 2003, J Records dropped the band, leading to a period of transition for its members.
In January 2011, when O-Town confirmed a reunion tour, Angel released a statement via TMZ.com declining to participate. He described the choice as 'difficult' but 'ultimately necessary' to move on to the next chapter of his career. Since then, he has pivoted toward Broadway, notably starring as Fiyero Tigelaar in 'Wicked' on both the touring production and the Broadway stage between 2017 and 2018. He also explored independent projects, including the band Mansions of Arcadia and songwriting with EMI Publishing.
