A 1985 police operation that became one of England's largest mass arrests
In short: When a convoy of New Age travellers tried to reach Stonehenge in 1985, the resulting confrontation escalated into a scene of extreme violence. It remains a controversial flashpoint of British history, marked by allegations of police brutality against families and a mass arrest of unprecedented scale.
The Battle of the Beanfield occurred on June 1, 1985, when Wiltshire Police moved to enforce a High Court injunction against the Stonehenge Free Festival. The operation targeted 'The Peace Convoy,' a group of approximately 600 travellers who had established an alternative lifestyle based on free festivals. The police, numbering around 1,300 officers, set up roadblocks and exclusion zones to prevent the convoy from reaching the landmark, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours.
The escalation of violence is a point of significant contention. While police claimed they were under attack with petrol bombs and stones, reports from The Observer and The Guardian suggest that intelligence regarding petrol bombs was false. Instead, eyewitnesses—including journalist Kim Sabido and the Earl of Cardigan—described a systematic assault. They reported that police in riot gear clubbed people with truncheons, including pregnant women and those holding babies, while smashing vehicle windows and setting homes on fire. The violence was so intense that Sabido compared it to scenes from the film Zulu.
The aftermath was staggering: 537 travellers were arrested, representing one of the largest mass arrests of civilians since World War II. Many were transported across the Midlands and into northern England due to a lack of local holding cells. While a 1991 civil court awarded 21 travellers £24,000 in damages for false imprisonment and wrongful arrest, the award was effectively negated by legal costs. The event remains a stark example of the friction between state authority and counter-cultural movements.
