Bebe Neuwirth is the only performer to play three distinct roles in one Broadway show.
In short: A classically trained dancer who pivoted from ballet to Broadway, Bebe Neuwirth became a television icon as Dr. Lilith Sternin on Cheers. Beyond her Emmy-winning screen work, she achieved a singular theatrical milestone by portraying three separate characters in the long-running Broadway revival of Chicago, cementing her status as a stage legend.
Born in 1958 in Newark, New Jersey, Neuwirth began ballet training at age five. By thirteen, she shifted her focus toward Broadway after seeing the musical Pippin. Although she briefly attended the Juilliard School in 1977, she found the environment creatively stifling and left to pursue jazz and singing training. Her professional stage career launched in 1980 with A Chorus Line, eventually leading to two Tony Awards for her performances in Sweet Charity and Chicago.
Neuwirth's television breakthrough occurred almost by accident. While in Los Angeles for the 1985 Tony Awards, she auditioned for the role of Lilith Sternin on Cheers. Originally intended as a one-episode guest spot, the character became a recurring fixture and eventually a series regular. Her portrayal of Frasier Crane’s wife earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards in 1990 and 1991. She later balanced her screen career with roles in films like Jumanji and television series such as Madam Secretary.
Her relationship with the musical Chicago is particularly notable. In 1996, she played Velma Kelly, a role she famously compared to performing microsurgery. She returned to the production in 2006 as Roxie Hart and again in 2014 as Mama Morton, becoming the first actor to inhabit three different roles during the same Broadway run. In 2023, the industry recognized her enduring contributions to the stage with an induction into the Theatre Hall of Fame.
Beyond her performance career, Neuwirth has dedicated significant time to advocacy. Following her own hip replacement surgeries, she founded the Dancers' Resource program at The Actors Fund to support the unique physical and financial challenges faced by professional dancers. She currently serves as the vice chair of the organization's board of trustees, continuing a legacy of service that complements her decades of artistic achievement.
