From Broadway star to TV icon: the versatile career of Inga Swenson
In short: A trained lyric soprano and two-time Tony nominee, Inga Swenson mastered everything from Shakespearean tragedy to sitcom comedy. While many remember her as the acerbic Gretchen Kraus on Benson, her journey began in high school speech contests and led to prestigious Broadway stages and major film roles.
Inga Swenson’s career was defined by a remarkable range that spanned stage, film, and television. A trained lyric soprano, she first made her Broadway debut in the 1956 revue New Faces. Her talent for musical theater earned her two Tony Award nominations for Best Actress in a Musical: first for her portrayal of Lizzie Curry in 110 in the Shade in 1964, and later for playing Irene Adler in Baker Street in 1965. Notably, Swenson considered her role as Lizzie Curry to be her personal favorite.
Beyond the Broadway stage, Swenson achieved significant success in television. She spent seven years on the ABC comedy series Benson, portraying the autocratic and acerbic German cook, Gretchen Kraus. This role, which included the signature catchphrase "I hear you!" and stories beginning with "When I was a little girl in Bavaria...", earned her three Emmy nominations. Her television work also included a multi-episode stint on the sitcom Soap as the Swedish birth mother Ingrid Svenson, and appearances in Bonanza and the mini-series North and South.
Swenson's early life was marked by both academic and competitive success. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 29, 1932, she was the youngest of three children. She graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1950, where she was the school's top vocalist and president of the Central High Players. Her competitive prowess was evident early on when she won both a state and a national title in the National Forensic League's speech contest while still a junior. On July 23, 2023, Swenson died in Los Angeles at 90 years old.
