From high school diver to global pop sensation: the rapid rise of Benson Boone
In short: Benson Boone went from a novice vocalist in a high school battle of the bands to a chart-topping artist in just a few years. After walking away from American Idol, he built a massive following on TikTok, eventually securing a record deal and performing on the world's biggest stages.
Born in Monroe, Washington, in 2002, Benson James Boone spent his youth as a competitive diver and tennis player. His musical journey began unexpectedly during his junior year of high school when a friend encouraged him to sing and play piano for a battle of the bands event. Despite having no prior vocal experience, he discovered a natural talent that would soon define his career.
Boone's professional trajectory accelerated after he auditioned for American Idol in 2021. Although he earned a spot in the Top 24, he made the bold decision to withdraw voluntarily to focus on his own creative path. He began sharing original music on TikTok, where he cultivated a following of 1.7 million users. This digital momentum caught the attention of Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons, who signed Boone to his Night Street Records label in October 2021.
Since his debut, Boone has achieved significant international success. His 2024 single, "Beautiful Things," topped charts across multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany, while reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. His debut album, Fireworks & Rollerblades, reached number six on the Billboard 200. His rapid ascent has led to high-profile opportunities, such as opening for Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium and performing at Coachella 2025, where he shared the stage with Queen guitarist Brian May.
Boone is frequently compared to Freddie Mercury due to his tenor vocal range, theatrical stage presence, and musical style. While he views these comparisons as a compliment, he emphasizes his commitment to maintaining his own artistic identity. Now based in Los Angeles, Boone continues to evolve, releasing his second studio album, American Heart, in 2025 and embarking on a world tour across North America and Europe.
