The handshake that built a fifty-million-dollar pop music empire
In short: Bob Gaudio was a teenage prodigy who co-wrote Short Shorts before joining The Four Seasons. Beyond his hits, he and Frankie Valli secured their future with a simple 1962 handshake deal, splitting their earnings fifty-fifty. This partnership eventually generated over fifty million dollars, defining the band's enduring financial legacy.
Born in the Bronx in 1942, Bob Gaudio was a cerebral, middle-class youth who found early success in the music industry. By age 15, he was a member of The Royal Teens, co-writing the hit Short Shorts. In 1960, after a failed audition at a bowling alley, he formed the Four Seasons Partnership with Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi. Gaudio proved to be a prolific songwriter, often crafting hits in minutes, such as Sherry, which he wrote just 15 minutes before a rehearsal in 1962.
Gaudio’s influence extended far beyond the Four Seasons. He collaborated with producer Bob Crewe to write a string of hits for the band and other artists, including The Walker Brothers and The Osmonds. In 1967, sensing a shift in the market, he attempted to pivot the band toward socially conscious music with the album The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette. While the project was a commercial failure at the time, it marked a period of artistic experimentation that saw Gaudio later produce for icons like Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and Neil Diamond.
In the 1970s, Gaudio stepped back from touring due to stage fright and introversion, focusing instead on production and songwriting. His later career included significant contributions to musical theater, most notably the Broadway hit Jersey Boys, which chronicled the group's history. Even decades later, Gaudio remains deeply involved in his work. He maintains a hands-on approach to managing the Four Seasons catalog, ensuring that his legacy—built on that original 1962 handshake—continues to resonate in modern music, from licensing to new compositions inspired by his earlier piano loops.
