How a struggling lounge singer turned a radio broadcast into a career-defining breakthrough
In short: Before Billy Joel became a household name, he was trapped in legal disputes and playing piano in Los Angeles. A single live radio broadcast from Philadelphia changed everything, turning an obscure performer into a Columbia Records priority and launching the album that would eventually define his musical legacy.
Released on November 14, 1973, Billy Joel’s second studio album, Piano Man, emerged from the shadow of significant legal troubles with his former label, Family Productions. While the title track—a fictionalized account of his time as a lounge singer—eventually became a signature song, the album's success was not immediate. In the United States, the record peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard 200, and despite receiving an RIAA gold certification in 1975, Joel famously earned only $8,000 in royalties at the time.
The true catalyst for Joel’s rise was a 1972 live broadcast from Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, aired on the station 93.3 WMMR. The performance of 'Captain Jack' from this session became the station's most requested song, creating a buzz that caught the attention of Columbia Records executives. This broadcast, which featured tracks like 'Long, Long Time' and 'Josephine' that never appeared on his studio albums, proved instrumental in securing his contract and establishing his reputation.
Critics at the time recognized the shift in Joel's work. Rolling Stone noted a 'new seriousness and flexibility' in the music, drawing comparisons to Elton John, while Billboard praised his potential as a consistent artist with a dynamic range. The album's journey was global as well as local; while initially planned for a May 1974 release in the UK via Philips, it did not arrive there until April 1975 through CBS. In 2011, Columbia revisited this era by releasing a two-disc legacy version, which finally gave listeners access to the full, raw energy of that pivotal 1972 Philadelphia performance.
