How a bathroom audition in Philadelphia launched the most successful R&B group of the nineties.
In short: Before they dominated the Billboard charts, Boyz II Men were high school students in Philadelphia. A chance encounter with New Edition member Michael Bivins backstage at a concert transformed their impromptu a cappella performance into a career-defining partnership, setting the stage for a decade of record-breaking vocal harmony success.
Formed at the Philadelphia High School for the Performing Arts, the group members were classmates who studied classical music and vocal arts. Their name was inspired by a song from the pop quintet New Edition. In 1989, the quartet secured a meeting with Michael Bivins, a member of New Edition, by performing an impromptu audition. Bivins became their manager, helping to shape their signature gentlemanly image and securing them a contract with Motown Records.
Their 1991 debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, sold over seven million copies and earned a Grammy Award. The group quickly became a chart-topping force. Their 1992 single, 'End of the Road,' spent 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard pop chart, surpassing the record previously held by Elvis Presley since 1956. They later engaged in a historic back-and-forth for the top spot, with 'I’ll Make Love to You' tying Whitney Houston’s record of 14 weeks, and 'One Sweet Day,' a collaboration with Mariah Carey, reaching 16 weeks at the top.
The group’s influence extended to rare chart feats. With the release of 'On Bended Knee,' they joined an elite group of artists, including the Beatles and Presley, who succeeded themselves at the number one position. Despite their massive success in the 1990s, the group faced declining sales with albums released after 1997. In 2003, founding member Michael McCary departed due to health issues. The remaining trio continued to tour and record, shifting between original material and collections of classic covers, maintaining their legacy as one of the most significant vocal groups in American music history.
