The 1940 'Team of Destiny' and the miracle of a safety
In short: In 1940, Boston College pulled off one of the most improbable turnarounds in college football history. Trailing against a dominant, undefeated Georgetown team, the Eagles faced a desperate fourth down in their own end zone. Instead of punting, they chose a high-risk gamble that changed the game forever.
The 1940 season is often cited as the greatest in Boston College history. The Eagles finished the regular season 10–0 before facing No. 9 Georgetown at a sold-out Fenway Park. The Hoyas entered the game with a 22-game winning streak spanning three seasons. The Eagles took the advantage when Monk Maznicki caught a 43-yard touchdown throw from Charlie O'Rourke during a thrilling concluding phase. With seconds left and the ball on their own nine-yard line facing a fourth down and 18 to go, O'Rourke chose not to punt. He scrambled in his own end zone for 45 seconds to take a safety, allowing BC to kick off and eventually dash past the Hoyas to secure a 19–18 victory.
This victory propelled the Eagles to the 1941 Sugar Bowl, where they defeated No. 4 Tennessee 19–13. While the school celebrates a national championship from 1940, the NCAA does not officially recognize the claim. While some selectors rated BC No. 1, the NCAA only recognizes Minnesota as the 1940 champion. The 1940 squad was so storied that five of its members—including Gene Goodreault, George Kerr, Chet Gladchuk, Mike Holovak, and Charlie O'Rourke—were eventually inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The program's history is marked by both high-profile success and controversy. In 1942, the team narrowly missed an AP national title after a 55–12 loss to Holy Cross, though the team's cancellation of a post-game celebration inadvertently saved 492 people from the Cocoanut Grove fire. Later, in 1996, the program faced a major scandal when 13 players were suspended and six were banned permanently for allegedly betting against their own team during a game against Syracuse.
