How a Nigerian singer turned childhood dreams into a global Afrobeats revolution
In short: Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy evolved from a toddler performing on restaurant tables to a Grammy-winning icon. By blending ancestral Afrobeat rhythms with modern global sounds, he has become a pivotal force in popularizing African music, selling out stadiums worldwide and reshaping the international music industry’s cultural landscape.
Born in Port Harcourt in 1991, Damini Ogulu was immersed in music from the start. His grandfather managed the legendary Fela Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat, while his mother, Bose Ogulu, eventually became his own manager. A young Ogulu began experimenting with production software at age 10, eventually moving to London to study media technology and communications. During this period, he developed the distinctive Brixton patois accent that would become a signature element of his musical identity.
Ogulu’s breakthrough arrived with his 2012 single 'Like to Party,' which launched his career under the name Burna Boy. He describes his unique sound as 'Afro-fusion,' a fluid blend of rap, R&B, jazz, and dancehall that draws on the protest funk of the 1960s and 70s. His 2019 album, African Giant, solidified his international status, earning a Grammy nomination and leading to a win for his 2020 project, Twice as Tall, which featured collaborations with artists like Youssou N’Dour and Chris Martin.
Burna Boy’s rise coincides with a massive global shift toward African sounds. Between 2017 and 2022, Spotify saw Afrobeats streams increase by 550 percent, while the Nigerian music industry experienced 63 percent revenue growth from 2021 to 2022. By 2023, he had become the first African artist to sell out stadium concerts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, proving that his 'divine colors' of music resonate far beyond his home continent.
