From Port Harcourt to Global Stages: The Rapid Rise of Nigerian Star Omah Lay
In short: Born into a musical family in Nigeria, Omah Stanley Didia transformed from a teenage rapper into a global Afrofusion sensation. With his debut EP topping charts and a billion-stream milestone on Spotify, Omah Lay has become a defining voice in contemporary African music, navigating international tours and high-profile collaborations.
Omah Stanley Didia, professionally known as Omah Lay, was born on 19 May 1997 and raised in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. His musical roots run deep; his father was a drummer, and his grandfather performed for the singer Celestine Ukwu until 1977. Initially performing as a rapper under the name Lil Street King, he shifted his focus to songwriting and production at age 16 before launching his solo career in 2019.
His breakthrough arrived in 2020 with the release of his debut EP, Get Layd. The project dominated the Nigerian Apple Music charts, with all five tracks reaching the top 15 and the single 'Bad Influence' becoming the most-streamed Nigerian song on Apple Music by year-end. This success earned him early recognition as Apple Music’s first Africa Rising artist and a Next Rated win at the 2020 Headies Awards. His momentum continued with the 2022 release of his debut studio album, Boy Alone, which earned critical acclaim for its introspective lyrics and Afrofusion sound.
Omah Lay’s international footprint has expanded significantly through collaborations with artists like Justin Bieber and his inclusion on the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack. By 2023, he had surpassed 1 billion total streams on Spotify. Beyond his music, he has been an outspoken advocate for the EndSARS movement, highlighting the systemic issues of police harassment faced by young Nigerians. Despite challenges, including a brief, controversial arrest in Uganda in 2020, he has maintained a steady ascent, selling out major venues like London’s O2 Academy Brixton in 2024.
