In short: The Capital One Arena is more than a venue; it is a site of urban resurrection. Built on a block once defined by decay, it survived naming rights battles and threats of relocation to become a cornerstone of D.C. sports history. Now, a massive overhaul aims to secure its future.

The arena's origins are rooted in urban renewal. By the 1960s, the site between 6th and 7th Streets suffered from urban decay. After a failed mixed-use project was canceled in 1992, a deal was struck to build a multi-purpose arena. While the District government initially planned to fund the $150 million project, a competing private proposal by Robert Johnson led owner Abe Pollin to privately fund the construction. The final cost reached $200 million (roughly $375 million in 2024 dollars), with the District covering land, site preparation, and Metro expansion costs totaling $79 million.

The venue has been a revolving door of identities and milestones. Opened in 1997 as the MCI Center, it became the Verizon Center in 2006 and finally the Capital One Arena in 2017. It has hosted the Washington Capitals since its inception, witnessing historic moments like the 1998 Stanley Cup Final and the 2018 championship win. It also served as the home for the Washington Mystics until 2018, before they moved to southeast Washington.

The arena's survival was recently threatened by a 2023 proposal to move teams to Virginia. However, a 2024 deal with owner Ted Leonsis secured the teams' stay in D.C. until at least 2050. This agreement includes a $1 billion multi-phase renovation to be completed by 2028. This massive investment will overhaul the exterior and interior, integrating new technology to improve the fan experience while maintaining the arena's role as a premier concert and event space.
