In short: Svetlana Ražnatović, known as Ceca, is one of the most commercially successful artists in Balkan history. Yet, her life is defined by more than record-breaking concerts. From her marriage to a notorious paramilitary leader to criminal convictions and deep political entanglements, her career remains inseparable from Serbia's turbulent modern history.

Born in 1973, Ceca rose to fame as a teenager, debuting in 1988 with the album Cvetak zanovetak. Her ascent was meteoric, eventually leading to massive stadium shows, including a 2013 concert in Belgrade that drew 150,000 attendees. Despite her status as a regional music star, her personal life became inextricably linked to the darker currents of the 1990s. In 1995, she married Željko Ražnatović, known as Arkan, a paramilitary commander and mobster. Their union, dubbed the 'wedding of the century,' placed her at the heart of the Serbian political and criminal elite.

The assassination of her husband in 2000 marked a turning point. Following the 2003 murder of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, Ceca was arrested on suspicion of harboring members of the Zemun Clan, spending 121 days in prison. While she was released of those charges, subsequent investigations into her management of the football club FK Obilić—which she inherited after Arkan's death—led to a 2011 conviction for embezzlement and illegal firearm possession. She served her sentence under house arrest, a period that did little to dampen her public popularity or her influence in the regional music industry.

Ceca’s influence extends well beyond the stage, as she has maintained long-standing ties with prominent politicians, including Ivica Dačić and Aleksandar Vučić. Her political involvement has occasionally sparked controversy; in 2021, a documentary series titled 'Heroes of the Evil Age' explored her political connections, leading to legal threats from her management. Today, she remains a polarizing figure, simultaneously celebrated as the 'Serbian Mother' and scrutinized for her proximity to the power structures that defined the Yugoslav Wars and their aftermath.
