In short: Born Steven Georgiou, the artist known as Cat Stevens dominated the folk-rock charts in the 1970s before abruptly abandoning his career. After converting to Islam in 1977, he auctioned his guitars and pivoted to humanitarian work, only to return to secular music decades later under the name Yusuf.

Born in London in 1948, Steven Demetre Georgiou grew up working in his family's restaurant. Inspired by the Beatles, he began his career in the mid-1960s, eventually adopting the stage name Cat Stevens. His early success was marked by hits like 'Matthew and Son', but he soon struggled with the pressures of fame, poor health, and a growing desire to move away from the over-produced sound favored by his label. This led to a legal battle to terminate his contract, ultimately granting him the creative freedom he craved.

The 1970s saw Stevens reach international stardom with albums like 'Tea for the Tillerman' and 'Teaser and the Firecat'. Working with producer Paul Samwell-Smith and guitarist Alun Davies, he developed a signature folk-rock sound that resonated globally. His lyrics often explored spiritual questions and personal relationships, such as those with Patti D'Arbanville and Carly Simon. By 1974, he had achieved record-breaking success in Australia, yet he remained restless, experimenting with different styles on albums like 'Foreigner' and 'Numbers', the latter of which was inspired by the teachings of Pythagoras.

In December 1977, Stevens converted to Islam, adopting the name Yusuf Islam. By 1979, he had auctioned his instruments and stepped away from the music industry to focus on education and philanthropy. His return to secular music in 2006 with 'An Other Cup' marked a significant shift, leading to a resurgence in touring and recording. In 2017, he began using the name Yusuf / Cat Stevens, reclaiming his original stage name for the first time in 39 years. Today, he remains a figure defined by his complex journey between pop stardom, spiritual devotion, and artistic reinvention.
