In short: From the grunge-heavy riffs of Soundgarden to the cinematic themes of James Bond, Chris Cornell possessed a rare vocal power. Yet, behind the massive album sales and Grammy nominations lay a lifelong struggle with depression and a deeply complex personal history.

Born Christopher John Boyle in Seattle in 1964, the musician who would become a cornerstone of the 1990s grunge movement navigated a turbulent youth. Before achieving global fame, he worked various blue-collar jobs, including as a fishmonger and a sous-chef at Seattle's Ray's Boathouse. His musical journey was shaped by early influences like The Beatles and a childhood spent mastering the piano and guitar.

As the frontman of Soundgarden, Cornell helped lead the Seattle scene to international dominance. The band's 1994 breakthrough, Superunknown, reached number one on the Billboard 200 and achieved quintuple platinum status in the U.S. His vocal prowess—noted for a nearly four-octave range and powerful belting technique—earned him high rankings from publications like Rolling Stone and Guitar World. Beyond Soundgarden, he found success with Audioslave, a solo career, and even contributed to the James Bond film Casino Royale with the theme 'You Know My Steinberg'.

Despite his professional triumphs, including 18 Grammy nominations and over 30 million records sold worldwide, Cornell faced significant personal challenges. He struggled with depression throughout much of his life, a battle that persisted even as he reached the heights of rock stardom. His death in May 2017, occurring shortly after a Soundgarden performance in Detroit, was ruled a suicide. His legacy remains preserved through posthumous honors, including a 2025 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
