How a French-educated business student became the undisputed Thai Queen of Dance
In short: Christina Aguilar shattered records in the Thai music industry, becoming the first female artist to sell a million copies of an album. With a career spanning over three decades, she transformed from a corporate assistant into a cultural icon, defining the sound and style of a generation through her legendary dance hits.
Born in Bangkok to a Filipino father and French-Vietnamese mother, Christina Aguilar initially pursued a path in business management in France. Her transition into music was serendipitous; while working for a French advertising agency, she returned to Thailand and met Rewat Bhuddhinan, the chief producer at GMM Grammy. This encounter pivoted her trajectory from corporate life to stardom, leading to her radio debut in 1990.
Aguilar’s impact on the Thai music scene was immediate and unprecedented. Her debut album, Ninja, earned platinum status with one million copies sold, a milestone never before reached by a Thai female singer. She maintained this momentum with remarkable consistency, becoming the only Thai artist to have her first four studio albums each surpass the million-copy mark. Her third album, Red Beat Rahutraun, remains the best-selling album by a female artist in Thai history, reaching three million copies sold.
Beyond her commercial success, Aguilar became known for her evolving image and influence. From the high-energy dance tracks of the early 1990s to more mature, self-written compositions like those on her 1997 album Golden Eye, she constantly reinvented her artistry. Her work even included cultural touchstones like the gay anthem Pood Eek Thee. Despite challenges such as the rise of music piracy in the early 2000s, which impacted physical sales, she remained a fixture in the industry.
Today, Aguilar is celebrated for her longevity and live performances. After a hiatus from studio albums following 2007’s C.Space, she has focused on major concerts, including her 25th-anniversary Christina Kingdom Concert and the 2023 Christina Q Concert. Her recent 2024 reunion with Bird Thongchai for the EP Khon Nok Kab Dok Mai: Dream For Love marks her first new releases in six years, proving her enduring status as a legendary figure in Thai music.
