A stray bullet in Puerto Rico launched the global reign of the reggaeton king.
In short: Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez once dreamed of playing professional baseball for the Seattle Mariners. A near-fatal shooting incident in a recording studio changed his trajectory forever. By refusing to let his injury stop him, he transformed from a local underground artist into the architect of a worldwide musical phenomenon.
Born in San Juan in 1976, Ayala grew up in the Villa Kennedy housing projects. His path to stardom began in the 1990s through underground mixtapes produced by DJ Playero, which were famously banned by the Puerto Rican government for their explicit content. During a break from one of these sessions, a stray round from an AK-47 struck him in the hip. The bullet was never removed, and the year-long recovery forced him to abandon his athletic ambitions to focus entirely on music.
Ayala, performing as Daddy Yankee, eventually moved away from traditional rap to pioneer the reggaeton genre, characterized by the distinct Dembow rhythm. His 2004 album, Barrio Fino, became the top-selling Latin music record of the decade. Its lead single, Gasolina, is widely credited with catapulting reggaeton into the global mainstream, even prompting the creation of a dedicated Billboard chart format for the genre. His influence continued to grow, culminating in the 2017 hit Despacito, which became the first Spanish-language track to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in over two decades.
Despite his immense success—including over 30 million records sold and numerous industry accolades—Ayala has maintained a complex relationship with the industry. He famously rejected a FIFA offer to make his song Grito Mundial the official 2010 World Cup theme because the organization demanded full ownership of the rights. After announcing his retirement in 2022 and completing a final tour in 2023, he returned to the studio, releasing the album Lamento en Baile in 2025. His career remains a testament to how an artist can reshape global culture while navigating the dark side of fame and the pressures of commercial music.
