In short: Daler Mehndi transformed Indian pop music, turning Bhangra into a worldwide phenomenon. Beyond his chart-topping hits and viral dance moves, he has built a legacy as a dedicated philanthropist and innovator, creating new musical instruments and genres while navigating a complex life that spans from stadium stages to legal battles.

Born in 1967 in Patna, Daler Mehndi emerged as a defining figure in Indian pop, helping the genre flourish independently of the Bollywood film industry. His debut album, Bolo Ta Ra Ra, sold over 20 million copies, establishing him as a major star. His influence reached a global scale with the 1998 hit Tunak Tunak Tun, which featured a music video produced on an unprecedented budget of ₹25 million. The song eventually became a viral internet sensation, with over 200 million views on YouTube and appearances in major video games like World of Warcraft.

Mehndi’s creative ambitions extend beyond performance. He is credited with developing a unique genre called Rabbabi, which blends Sufi, Thumri, and rock influences. He also commissioned the Swar Mandir, a custom instrument combining elements of the Rabab, Swarmandal, and Tanpura, which was unveiled by classical maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar in 2012. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch his own record label, DRecords, in 2000, providing a platform for diverse musical talent.

His career has been marked by significant humanitarian efforts. He launched the Daler Mehndi Green Drive, which has planted over 1.2 million saplings in Delhi, and established a 24-hour kitchen to feed the underprivileged. He has raised millions for charitable causes, including disaster relief in Gujarat and support for Kargil martyrs. However, his life has also faced legal turbulence; in 2003, he was accused of human trafficking, leading to a 2018 conviction and a two-year prison sentence. While his sentence was upheld in 2022, he was subsequently granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court.

Mehndi’s reach remains vast, from performing at the NASDAQ closing bell in New York to being the only Indian artist invited as a state guest by the President of Pakistan. Whether through his advocacy for turban rights in sports or his political involvement with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mehndi remains a polarizing yet undeniably influential figure in contemporary Indian culture.
