The art of the musical attack: from colonial anthems to hip-hop beefs
In short: What do 18th-century British colonists and modern hip-hop superstars have in common? They both used music to launch targeted, verbal assaults. While often associated with modern rap feuds, the diss track is a storied medium used to settle scores, dismantle reputations, and spark viral cultural moments.
While the term 'diss track' is a hip-hop staple, the practice of musical disparagement has deep historical roots. In the 18th century, the song 'Yankee Doodle' served as a tool for Loyalist colonists to mock Patriot opponents, characterizing them as foolish. Even the 1963 album 'I Am the Greatest' by Muhammad Ali—a precursor to hip-hop—used 'trash talk' to establish his persona before his heavyweight championship win against Sonny Liston in 1964.
In the hip-hop genre, diss tracks often escalate 'beefs' between artists or rival labels. The mid-1990s East Coast–West Coast rivalry was fueled by tracks like Tim Dog's 1991 'Fuck Compton' and Dr. Dre's responses. These conflicts can become incredibly complex, involving 'sneak disses'—indirect jabs that avoid naming the target—and back-and-forth responses that drive massive engagement. A notable example is the 2001 clash between Jay-Z and Nas, where Nas's track 'Ether' became so influential that the name became slang for a total defeat.
The medium has expanded far beyond rap. John Lennon used 'Sexy Sadie' to target the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and even scientists have entered the fray; in 201s, rapper B.o.B. released 'Flatline' against astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson following a dispute over the shape of the Earth. Today, the phenomenon spans YouTube creators and even corporate marketing, such as Pusha T's 2022 collaboration with Arby's to target the McDonald's Filet-O-Fish.
