In short: The East Coast–West Coast rivalry was not merely a regional dispute but a volatile escalation of personal feuds, industry posturing, and intense media scrutiny. While fans and journalists framed it as a coastal war, the conflict ultimately spiraled into the tragic murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.

The rivalry originated from a perceived cultural divide. Hip-hop began in New York City, leading to a sense of superiority among East Coast artists, while West Coast performers often felt an inferiority complex. By the early 1990s, the West Coast scene was flourishing with acts like N.W.A. Tensions grew as labels like Suge Knight’s Death Row Records in Los Angeles and Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs’s Bad Boy Records in New York became the primary vehicles for this regional friction.

The conflict intensified after Tupac Shakur was shot five times at Quad Studios in Manhattan in 1994. Tupac suspected Bad Boy Records' involvement, a claim the label denied. The feud turned increasingly public with events like the 1995 Source Awards, where Suge Knight openly taunted Puff Daddy. Media outlets, including Vibe and The Source, played a significant role in escalating the drama, often framing the conflict as a 'coastal war' to drive readership and record sales.

Despite efforts to broker peace, including a 1997 summit led by Louis Farrakhan, the violence proved difficult to contain. Tupac was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996, and The Notorious B.I.G. was murdered in a similar fashion in Los Angeles six months later. While some artists, such as Nas and Dr. Dre, continued to collaborate, the deaths of these two central figures effectively marked the end of the era's most destructive rivalry.
