In short: While many cultures describe duendes as mischievous, gnome-like spirits that haunt forests or hide in home walls, the term has evolved into a profound aesthetic concept. In flamenco and literature, duende represents an inexplicable, earthy force—a brush with death and irrationality that elevates human expression beyond mere technical skill.

The term duende originates from the Castilian phrase dueñ(o) de casa, or master of the house, reflecting its roots as a domestic, often mischievous spirit. Across Iberian and Latin American folklore, these humanoid figures vary wildly: from the benevolent, star-clothed Anjanas of Cantabria to the troublesome Trasgos who steal household items. In Mexico and the American Southwest, they are often depicted as small creatures living in bedroom walls, while in the Philippines, nunò sa punsó inhabit anthills and termite mounds, demanding respect to avoid a curse.

The concept took a significant turn in 1933 when poet Federico García Lorca published his treatise, Play and Theory of the Duende. Moving away from the literal goblins of myth, Lorca defined duende as a mysterious, diabolical power that artists feel during peak performance. It is characterized by an awareness of death, earthiness, and a rejection of rational explanation. This artistic interpretation has since permeated literature and music, influencing works by Giannina Braschi, who explores the duende alongside the angel and muse as a source of inspiration, and Tracy K. Smith, who titled her collection of poems Duende.

Historically, the transition from superstition to aesthetic theory was fraught. In 1676, Fray Antonio de Fuentelapeña attempted to categorize these invisible entities in The Elucidated Entity, while in the eighteenth century, Father Benito Jerónimo Feijoo campaigned against such beliefs in his Universal Critical Theater. Today, the duende remains a dual entity: a persistent, diverse mythological figure in global folklore and a sophisticated, elusive metaphor for the raw, unexplainable energy that defines the most powerful moments in human art.
