Beyond the screen: Elizabeth McGovern’s evolution from Hollywood star to singer-songwriter
In short: While globally recognized for her role as Cora Crawley in Downton Abbey, Elizabeth McGovern has quietly cultivated a parallel life as a musician. Since 2007, she has fronted the band Sadie and the Hotheads, blending her acting career with a prolific output of studio albums and international festival performances.
Elizabeth McGovern’s transition into music began in 2007, when she formed the band Sadie and the Hotheads after years of dedicated guitar study. The group started performing at The Castle pub in London, eventually evolving into a serious musical project. Their debut album, I Can Wait, featured collaborations with The Nelson Brothers, who became core members of the band. The project has since expanded to include various guest contributors, such as drummer Rowan Oliver and backing vocalist Michelle Dockery, McGovern’s on-screen daughter from Downton Abbey.
The band’s musical journey has been marked by steady growth and diverse projects. By 2013, they were touring the UK and Europe, appearing at major events like the Isle of Wight Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Their discography includes several studio albums, such as Still Waiting, released in 2014, and a compilation titled The Collection (Everybody's Got A Song) in 2016. McGovern has also explored solo-branded work, releasing the 2019 album The Truth under her own name, which featured a guest appearance by Samuel L. Jackson, while continuing to collaborate with her established bandmates.
McGovern’s musical output remains active alongside her continued acting career. In 2025, she released her sixth album, Let's Stop Fighting, under the Sadie and the Hotheads name. This dual career path highlights a creative versatility that spans decades, from her 1980 film debut in Ordinary People to her recent stage work in Ava: The Secret Conversations. Whether performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe or reprising her role as the Countess of Grantham, McGovern maintains a consistent presence in both the music industry and the dramatic arts.
