In short: Long before she became a household name as Peg Bundy or Gemma Teller Morrow, Katey Sagal built a career as a session singer. She provided backing vocals for legends like Bob Dylan and Etta James, proving that her artistic roots were firmly planted in the music industry long before television success.

Born into a show business family in Los Angeles, Katey Sagal’s early professional life was defined by music rather than acting. In 1973, she began working as a backing vocalist for high-profile artists including Bob Dylan, Etta James, and Tanya Tucker. Her musical journey continued throughout the 1970s and 1980s, featuring contributions to Gene Simmons’ self-titled solo album in 1978 and Olivia Newton-John’s 1985 single 'Soul Kiss.' She also spent time as a member of the Harlettes, Bette Midler’s backing group, during two separate stints in 1978 and between 1982 and 1983.

Sagal’s musical output eventually transitioned into solo work and soundtrack contributions. She released her debut solo album, Well..., in 1994, which included the song '(You) Can't Hurry the Harvest.' She wrote the lyrics to this track as a personal response to the stillbirth of her daughter, Ruby, in 1991. Later, in the 2010s, she became deeply involved with the music for the series Sons of Anarchy, collaborating with the house band, The Forest Rangers, on multiple soundtrack albums and singles. This creative partnership extended to her 2013 album, Covered.

While her television career—spanning iconic roles in Married... with Children, Futurama, and Sons of Anarchy—often takes center stage, Sagal has consistently maintained her musical identity. Whether performing live off-Broadway in 2023 or contributing to soundtracks for shows like Mayans M.C., her career reflects a dual path. Her ability to navigate both the demands of long-running sitcoms and the nuance of songwriting highlights a versatile artistic life that began with a microphone in a recording studio, long before she ever stepped in front of a television camera for a major role.
