Epic Mickey reunited Mickey with the rabbit Disney lost to Universal
Before Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but Universal Pictures owned him. Disney only won the character back in 2006. Four years later, a Wii game called Epic Mickey put the two side by side for the first time, in a ruined theme park for forgotten cartoons.
Released in November 2010 by Junction Point Studios and Disney Interactive, Epic Mickey was directed by Warren Spector in collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios. It was part of a deliberate attempt to rebrand Mickey, playing down the cheerful mascot and bringing back the mischievous, adventurous streak of his early cartoons.
The story begins with Mickey stepping through his bedroom mirror into the workshop of the sorcerer Yen Sid, who is building a model world for disused Disney characters. Meddling with the magic brush, Mickey creates an ink monster and spills paint and thinner all over the model. That world, the Wasteland, is a sketchy, damaged mirror of Disneyland: Mean Street echoes Main Street, U.S.A., Mickeyjunk Mountain is the Matterhorn buried in unsold Mickey merchandise, and Lonesome Manor stands in for the Haunted Mansion. It is terrorised by the Shadow Blot, loosely based on a comic-strip villain, and by the Mad Doctor, who has betrayed Oswald.
The brush is the core mechanic. Paint restores objects or turns enemies into friends; thinner erases scenery or destroys foes. Both run low, so players must weigh their options, and the choices feed a morality system that opens different alliances, side quests and power-ups, and can even let players bypass mini-bosses. Linking areas are 2D side-scrolling levels drawn from classic shorts such as Steamboat Willie, plus several Oswald cartoons.
Critics admired the visual style, inventive play and the game's knowing commentary on Disney's own history, while faulting the camera and the limited impact of player choices. It is widely credited with reviving interest in Oswald and minor characters such as Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, and led to two follow-ups. A remake, Rebrushed, arrived on modern consoles on September 24, 2024.
