In short: Erich Wolfgang Korngold was already a celebrated classical composer when the rise of the Nazi regime forced him to Hollywood. There, he pioneered the operatic approach to film scoring, creating the lush, symphonic template that would eventually define the sound of modern epics like Star Wars.

Born in 1897, Korngold was a child prodigy who could reproduce melodies on the piano by age five and compose original music by seven. Mentored by Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, he became a fixture of European opera houses by his early twenties. His transition to Hollywood in 1934 was prompted by director Max Reinhardt, but it was the annexation of Austria by the Nazis that turned his temporary assignment into a permanent exile. Korngold famously remarked that while he had always considered himself Viennese, Hitler made him Jewish.

In Hollywood, Korngold revolutionized film music by treating scores as "operas without singing." He brought a late-Romantic sensibility to the screen, utilizing Wagnerian leitmotifs, chromatic harmonies, and the orchestral virtuosity of Richard Strauss. His work on swashbucklers like The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and Captain Blood (1935) established a standard for symphonic storytelling. By prerecording music to guide actors' movements and timing, he elevated the score from mere background noise to a central narrative force.

Though his late-Romantic style fell out of fashion by the time of his death in 1957, his influence saw a massive resurgence in the 1970s. His son, George Korngold, produced a series of recordings that reignited interest in his film scores and concert works, such as his Violin Concerto in D, which incorporates themes from his motion pictures. Today, composers like John Williams cite Korngold as a primary inspiration, cementing his legacy as a founder of American film music whose work remains a blueprint for cinematic grandeur.
