How a Swedish theater band turned demonic anti-pope imagery into a global rock phenomenon
In short: Ghost began in 2006 as an anonymous project, blending hard rock with theatrical, occult-inspired personas. Led by Tobias Forge, the band evolved from a basement recording experiment into a Grammy-winning act, consistently reinventing its frontman and sound while maintaining a mysterious, costumed identity that captivated audiences worldwide.
Formed in Linköping, Sweden, in 2006, Ghost was the brainchild of Tobias Forge. Initially, Forge intended to play guitar, but after several vocalists declined his offer, he assumed the role of lead singer by default. He adopted the persona of Papa Emeritus, a demonic anti-pope figure, while other band members performed as anonymous Nameless Ghouls in hooded robes. This commitment to theatricality and horror-film aesthetics helped define their unique brand of arena rock and heavy metal.
The band's rise was marked by both critical acclaim and legal friction. Their 2010 debut, Opus Eponymous, brought international attention, and their 2015 track 'Cirice' secured a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. However, in 2017, a royalties dispute with former members forced Forge to reveal his identity. Despite this, the project continued to thrive, with Forge maintaining that Ghost was always a solo project rather than a traditional band partnership. His ability to cycle through characters—from Papa Emeritus I through IV to Cardinal Copia and Papa V Perpetua—allowed the band to refresh its narrative with every album cycle.
Ghost's commercial success peaked with their sixth studio album, Skeletá, released in 2025, which became their first to top the US Billboard 200 chart. The band's sound, described as a fusion of pop, death metal, and psychedelic rock, has consistently challenged genre norms. Following the conclusion of the 'Skeletour' in February 2026, Forge announced a hiatus, citing a need to step away for family life and new creative inspiration. Throughout their two-decade run, Ghost transformed from a local curiosity into a cultural force, leaving behind a legacy of concert films like Rite Here Rite Now and a catalog that defies easy categorization.
