In short: Formed in Paris in 1981, Indochine evolved from a niche new wave act into a stadium-filling powerhouse. Despite losing a founding member to tragedy and navigating shifting musical trends, the band has sold over 10 million records, proving that resilience and reinvention are the ultimate keys to musical longevity.

Indochine began in 1981 when Nicola Sirkis and Dominique Nicolas, both in their early twenties, formed the group in Paris. Their debut concert at Le Rose Bonbon that September quickly secured them a record deal. By 1983, they were a major force in French music, with their hit 'L'Aventurier' defining the summer. Their early success extended beyond Francophone borders, notably reaching Sweden, where they experienced a fan fervor described as similar to Beatlemania.

The band's trajectory was not without turbulence. In 1989, saxophonist Dimitri Bodiansky left the group, and in 1999, guitarist and keyboardist Stéphane Sirkis—Nicola's twin brother—passed away at 39. Before his death, Stéphane requested that the band continue. They honored this wish, eventually finding a new creative spark in 2002 with the album Paradize. This release marked a significant aesthetic shift toward darker, more introspective themes, influenced by acts like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, and sold 1,000,000 copies.

Indochine’s ability to adapt has kept them relevant for over 40 years. They were the first French band to headline the Stade de France in 2010, performing for 80,000 people. Their career has seen them navigate various controversies, from the 1987 accusations of copying The Cure to the 2013 debate over the violent imagery in their 'College Boy' music video. Through it all, they have maintained a massive following, culminating in a 14th studio album released in 2024 and an extensive tour across France and Belgium.
