How Imelda Staunton mastered the stage and screen through a lifetime of craft
In short: From her humble beginnings in North London to becoming a dame of the British stage, Imelda Staunton has built a career defined by versatility. Whether portraying iconic villains in blockbuster films or leading critically acclaimed musical revivals, her journey reveals a relentless dedication to the craft of performance.
Born in 1956 to Irish immigrant parents, Imelda Staunton grew up in Archway, North London. Her mother, a musician who played in Irish showbands, possessed a natural ability to play any tune by ear, a trait that perhaps foreshadowed Staunton's own deep connection to musical performance. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she spent her early years in repertory theatre, eventually securing roles that would earn her widespread recognition.
Staunton’s career is marked by a rare ability to pivot between intense dramatic roles and complex musical theatre. She won a BAFTA for her portrayal of the title character in the 2004 film Vera Drake, a role that also garnered her an Academy Award nomination. Simultaneously, she has become a titan of the West End, winning four Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical for her performances in Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, and Hello, Dolly!.
Beyond her stage success, Staunton has left an indelible mark on popular culture, notably as the antagonist Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series and as Queen Elizabeth II in the final seasons of The Crown. Her commitment to her roles is such that she was filming scenes for The Crown on the day of the Queen's death in 2022. Today, she remains a celebrated figure, recognized with a damehood in 2024 for her services to drama and charity.
