Beyond the Cabinet: The Secret Hobby of a High-Ranking British Politician
In short: While James Cleverly navigated the high-stakes world of the Home Office and Foreign Office, he maintained a quiet, unconventional escape. Far from the pressures of Westminster, the former Cabinet minister spent his time meticulously painting miniatures for a popular tabletop wargame, a hobby he documented on a private YouTube channel.
James Cleverly, a long-serving Conservative politician and former Home Secretary, has led a career marked by rapid shifts in ministerial responsibility. From his early days as a London Assembly member to his tenure as Foreign Secretary under Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, Cleverly has been a central figure in British politics. Yet, beneath the surface of his public life—which includes a knighthood for political service and a military background in the Army Reserve—lies a surprising personal interest: the miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000.
In 2022, while serving in high-level government roles, Cleverly maintained a private YouTube channel dedicated to the intricate craft of painting these game miniatures. This creative pursuit offers a stark contrast to his professional life, which has often been defined by intense scrutiny and public controversy. Whether defending government policy on the international stage or navigating domestic political crises, Cleverly’s public persona has frequently been the subject of debate, from his comments on cultural norms in Qatar to his remarks regarding his wife’s drink.
Cleverly’s career trajectory has been anything but linear. After being knocked out of the 2024 Conservative leadership contest in a result widely considered a shock, he returned to the backbenches before re-entering the Shadow Cabinet. His life outside of politics is equally multifaceted, involving his marriage to Susannah Sparks, his identity as an atheist and humanist, and his ongoing commitment to public service. His transition from the military to the highest levels of government, coupled with his dedication to niche hobbies, paints a portrait of a figure who remains as complex as the political landscape he has helped shape for over a decade.
