How a Busan dance prodigy became the first Korean solo artist to top Billboard charts.
In short: Park Ji-min, known globally as Jimin, transformed from a contemporary dance student into a record-breaking musical phenomenon. As a member of BTS, he redefined global pop, but his solo career has shattered historical barriers, making him the first Korean solo artist to secure a number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Born in Busan in 1995, Jimin’s path to stardom began with rigorous training in popping, locking, and modern dance. After excelling at the Busan High School of Arts, he joined Big Hit Entertainment in 2012. He debuted with BTS in 2013, quickly distinguishing himself as a vocalist and dancer known for his delicate, expressive stage presence. His early solo contributions within the group, such as the dramatic "Lie" and the sensual "Serendipity," demonstrated his ability to convey complex emotional narratives through music.
Jimin’s solo trajectory accelerated in 2023 with the release of his debut album, Face. The project achieved unprecedented international success, with the single "Like Crazy" marking a historic milestone as the first song by a Korean soloist to debut at the summit of the US Billboard Hot 100. He followed this in 2024 with his second album, Muse, and the single "Who," which dominated global charts. Beyond his commercial achievements, Jimin has been recognized for his influence on other artists, earning the moniker "Idol of Idols" for his technical precision and performance style.
His impact extends well beyond the stage. Jimin is a dedicated philanthropist, consistently donating to provincial education offices across South Korea to fund scholarships and reading programs for underprivileged students. His commitment to service also manifested during his mandatory military enlistment, where he was recognized as an outstanding trainee and earned the title of Special Class Warrior. Whether through his support for polio eradication or his contributions to local welfare, Jimin maintains a reputation for quiet, consistent generosity that mirrors the discipline he brings to his craft.
