Why the melancholic lute music of John Dowland remains a timeless crossover sensation
In short: John Dowland was the definitive virtuoso lutenist of the Renaissance, celebrated for his deeply emotional compositions. Though he served European royalty, his legacy persists today through a modern revival of his lute works, bridging the gap between sixteenth-century courtly art and twenty-first-century popular music recordings.
John Dowland was a preeminent English composer, singer, and lutenist whose career spanned the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. His primary instrument, the lute, was a plucked stringed instrument popular throughout Europe during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Originating from the Arab oud, the lute evolved into a sophisticated instrument with six courses of strings, allowing for a noble literature of solo fantasias, dance movements, and song accompaniments.
Dowland’s music is distinguished by a profound sense of melancholia, a quality he pioneered alongside contemporaries like Anthony Holborne. His work includes famous lute songs and instrumental collections such as Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares, which features seven pavanes for viols and lute based on his song Flow my tears. This specific work became one of the most celebrated collections of consort music of his era, with his pavane Lachrymae antiquae frequently serving as a foundation for variations by other composers.
The lute itself underwent significant changes during Dowland's lifetime, including the addition of bass strings that led to the development of larger instruments like the theorbo and chitarrone. While keyboard instruments eventually eclipsed the lute in popularity by the eighteenth century, the twentieth century saw a major revival of the instrument's repertory by performers like Julian Bream. In the early twenty-first century, the lute reached a new audience when rock musician Sting released recordings of Dowland’s music, cementing the composer's status as a crossover artist.
