In short: John Lee Hooker transformed Delta blues into a hypnotic, electric force. By stomping on wooden pallets to keep time and ignoring standard beats, he created a signature boogie style that defied musical conventions. Despite being illiterate, he became a prolific songwriter, leaving an indelible mark on rock and roll history.

Born in Tutwiler, Mississippi, likely in 1912, John Lee Hooker grew up in a musical household where he was exposed to spirituals. His path to stardom began after he moved to Detroit in 1943 to work for the Ford Motor Company. In a city dominated by piano players, Hooker stood out by adapting his acoustic Delta roots to the electric guitar, seeking a louder sound for the clubs on Hastings Street.

Hooker’s recording process was as unconventional as his rhythm. Because he rarely played with a standard beat, backing musicians often struggled to follow his tempo. To solve this, producer Bernie Besman recorded Hooker singing and playing while stomping his feet on a wooden pallet. This technique captured the raw, driving energy of his boogie style, which was distinct from the piano-based boogie-woogie popular at the time. His 1948 hit 'Boogie Chillen'' became the best-selling race record of 1949.

Throughout the 1950s, Hooker faced the common industry exploitation of the era, earning little from his hits. To bypass restrictive contracts, he recorded variations of his songs under numerous pseudonyms, including Texas Slim, Delta John, and the Boogie Man. His career saw a massive resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s through high-profile collaborations with artists like Van Morrison, Carlos Santana, and Bonnie Raitt. By the time he died in 2001, he had secured his legacy as a titan of the genre, with multiple Grammy wins and inductions into both the Blues and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.
