How a Harvard-trained actor became a master of both stage and screen
In short: John Lithgow’s career spans decades of transformative performances, from sitcom physics professors to Winston Churchill. With a background rooted in classical theater and a relentless drive for versatility, he has secured a rare collection of accolades, proving that the most enduring actors are those who constantly reinvent their craft.
Born in 1945 to a theatrical producer, John Lithgow’s path to stardom began at Harvard University, where a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Utopia Limited convinced him to pursue acting. After studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he made his Broadway debut in 1972 in The Changing Room, winning a Tony Award. His early film career included notable roles in The World According to Garp and Terms of Endearment, both of which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
Lithgow’s television work is equally decorated. He gained widespread fame as Dick Solomon in the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, winning three Primetime Emmy Awards. Later, his portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crown required intense preparation, including the use of a fatsuit and mouth plumpers to mimic the historical figure’s speech. This performance earned him further critical acclaim and another Emmy. He has also demonstrated a unique ability to play antagonists, such as the serial killer Arthur Mitchell in Dexter and the manipulative Roger Ailes in Bombshell.
Beyond his screen work, Lithgow remains a dedicated stage actor. In 2024, he received a Laurence Olivier Award for his portrayal of Roald Dahl in the play Giant. His career is marked by a refusal to be typecast, moving seamlessly between children's animation, intense dramas, and comedic roles. Whether narrating ballets or starring in conspiracy thrillers like Conclave, Lithgow’s approach remains rooted in the rigorous training he received as a young student of history and literature.
