In short: José Alfredo Jiménez never learned to play an instrument or read music, yet he composed over 1,000 songs that define modern Mexican culture. From his humble beginnings as a restaurant waiter to his status as a national icon, his story is as legendary as the songs he left behind.

Born in 1926 in Dolores Hidalgo, Jiménez faced early hardship when his father died, forcing him to work in Mexico City to support his family. While working as a waiter at a restaurant called La Sirena, he began writing songs and performing with a group known as Los Rebeldes. His path to fame was unconventional; he lacked formal musical training, did not know the terminology for musical structures, and performed his early auditions entirely a cappella.

Despite these limitations, his talent was undeniable. Discovered by singer Miguel Aceves Mejía, Jiménez went on to create a massive catalog of hits, including classics like El Rey and Si nos dejan. His work is considered the foundation of modern Regional Mexican music. His influence transcended genres, with his songs being recorded by diverse artists ranging from Selena to the rock band Maná. He remained a prolific creator until the end of his life, introducing his final composition, Gracias, on television shortly before his death in 1973 at age 47.

Beyond his music, Jiménez lived a complex personal life marked by multiple long-term relationships and a disputed marital status. He is buried in his hometown, where his tomb is designed to resemble the iconic shawl and sombrero he wore on stage. Decades after his passing, his legacy continues to be celebrated through books written by his children, including a commemorative volume about his life and a work marking five decades since his death, released at the Guadalajara International Book Fair.
