In short: Born in Sweden, Jussi Björling was a vocal prodigy who toured internationally as a child before becoming one of the 20th century's most celebrated tenors. Renowned for his exquisite musicianship in Italian and French opera, he commanded the stage at the Metropolitan Opera for decades, leaving an indelible mark on music.

Born in 1911, Jussi Björling began his musical journey at age six under the tutelage of his father, David. Alongside his two brothers, he performed as part of the Björling Male Quartet, touring Scandinavia and the United States for over a decade. Following his father's death in 1926, the young singer briefly worked as a lamp salesman before auditioning for the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1928. His formal operatic debut followed in 1930, when he performed as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Björling’s international career accelerated rapidly throughout the 1930s. After achieving success at London’s Covent Garden in 1936, he made his American concert debut at Carnegie Hall in 1937. By 1938, he secured a position at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, debuting as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème. While the Second World War restricted his appearances to Europe, he returned to the United States in 1945, resuming his tenure at the Metropolitan Opera and solidifying his reputation as a master of the French and Italian repertoires.

Beyond his operatic roles, Björling was a prolific recitalist and soloist in symphonic choral works. He collaborated with legendary conductors like Arturo Toscanini, notably performing in Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and the Verdi Requiem. Despite a strained relationship with Metropolitan Opera management in the mid-1950s, he remained a titan of the stage until his death in 1960 at age 49. His legacy persists, with critics later ranking him among the greatest singers of the century.
