In short: Born in 1909, K. P. H. Notoprojo became a global ambassador for Javanese gamelan. His influence was so profound that one of his court gamelan recordings was selected for the Voyager Golden Record, carrying his musical legacy far beyond Earth to greet whatever extraterrestrials might eventually encounter the spacecraft.

Known by many names throughout his long life—including Tjokrowasito, Wasitodipuro, and Wasitodiningrat—Notoprojo was a master of the rebab and a prolific composer. Born in Yogyakarta, he began his musical training at age five under his father, R.W. Padmowinangum, at the Paku Alaman palace. By the time he assumed leadership of the palace gamelan in 1962, he had already built a career directing radio ensembles and teaching across the globe.

Notoprojo was a bridge between tradition and innovation. He revived extinct art forms like wayang gedhog and pioneered music for the sendratari dance-drama genre in the 1960s. His body of work includes over 250 compositions, ranging from light pieces to experimental works. His pedagogical impact was equally significant; he taught at institutions like the California Institute of the Arts from 1971 until his retirement in 1992, and his hand-written vocal notations for nearly 300 pieces remain a vital resource for scholars.

His legacy is perhaps best captured by the inclusion of his recording of 'Puspawarna' on the Voyager Golden Record. Carl Sagan, who helped curate the record, reportedly counted the piece among his favorites. As musicologist Mantle Hood noted, no other Indonesian has contributed more to the global understanding of Java's great gamelan traditions. When he passed away in 2007, he left behind a cultural footprint that spans from the courts of Central Java to the furthest reaches of the solar system.
