In short: Shakira didn't just want to sing in English; she wanted to own the language. To cross over into the mainstream, she traded her comfort zone for rhyming dictionaries, private tutors, and the poetry of Leonard Cohen, all to ensure her transition from Latin star to global icon was entirely on her own terms.

In 1999, following the success of 'Dónde Están los Ladrones?', singer Shakira faced a pivotal crossroads. While her label, Epic Records, wanted her to simply add a few English tracks to a Latin record, her mentor Gloria Estefan fought for a full English-language crossover. Shakira was initially hesitant, as English was not her first language. To maintain creative control, she refused to simply have her songs translated; instead, she committed to learning the language well enough to write her own lyrics from scratch.

Her preparation was rigorous and academic. She studied the works of Walt Whitman and Leonard Cohen, analyzed Bob Dylan’s lyrics, and took private English lessons. To compose her work, she established mobile recording spaces within the Uruguayan countryside, employing both a thesaurus and a dictionary simultaneously. This rigorous method produced 'Laundry Service' (2001), a record merging her Lebanese, Spanish, and Colombian roots with rock and roll, tango, and Andean sounds.

The gamble paid off. By 2011, 'Laundry Service' had moved roughly 13 million units, establishing it as a premier 21st-century commercial success. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 2000 and achieved multi-platinum status in the US and UK. The album's title itself served as a metaphor for her process: she compared her dedication to love and music to 'soap and water,' describing the creative period as a 'deep cleansing' and a form of rebirth.
