How a rejected Fugees demo became the most successful song of 2006 worldwide
In short: Shakira’s global smash Hips Don't Lie began as a discarded project titled Lips Don't Lie. After a label executive intervened, the track was transformed into a chart-topping Latin pop anthem. It shattered radio airplay records and became a cultural phenomenon, proving that sometimes the best hits are born from second chances.
The origins of the song trace back to a failed Fugees reunion, where Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras attempted to record a track called Lips Don't Lie. When Hill expressed dissatisfaction, the project stalled. Epic Records president Charlie Walk later intervened, requesting a remix featuring Shakira. Jean pivoted to his 2004 song Dance Like This, which he had recorded for the Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights soundtrack, and reworked it into the version that would eventually dominate global airwaves.
Musically, the track is a fusion of Latin pop and reggaeton, featuring a distinctive sampled salsa trumpet line from Jerry Rivera’s 1992 song Amores Como el Nuestro. While Rivera initially accused Shakira of plagiarism, the necessary rights had already been secured from his former label. The song also incorporates rhythms from Surinamese Kawina music, showcasing the diverse influences that contributed to its unique sound. Shakira famously used her own physical response to the music as a barometer for its readiness, telling musicians that if her hips were not moving, the track was not finished.
The song's commercial performance was unprecedented. Upon its 2006 release, it set a new benchmark for radio frequency, reaching 9,637 plays in a single week. It topped charts in 18 countries, including the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. By 2017, it had amassed an estimated 13 million downloads, cementing its status as one of the best-selling singles in history. Beyond the charts, the song sparked a new era of fan-artist interaction through early digital video campaigns, and its legacy continues through its status as a staple of Shakira's live performances, including the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show.
