How Lourdes Van-Dúnem defied gender norms to become the voice of Angolan music
In short: In a 1960s Angolan music scene dominated by men, Lourdes Van-Dúnem emerged as a rare and powerful female force. From her early days with the influential Ngola Ritmos to her international humanitarian work, she redefined the country's sonic landscape and became a celebrated icon of African cultural identity.
Born in Luanda in 1935, Maria de Lourdes Pereira dos Santos Van-Dúnem began her musical journey while still in school. Her professional career took flight in 1960 when she joined Ngola Ritmos, a group whose members were not only musical pioneers but also key supporters of the anti-colonial MPLA movement. During this era, she stood out as one of the few recognized female singers in a male-dominated industry, eventually recording her acclaimed debut album, Monami.
Her influence expanded significantly in the 1970s when she joined the band Jovens do Prenda. This transition marked a period of extensive international travel, with performances spanning Portugal, Brazil, Algeria, France, Spain, and Zimbabwe. By the 1980s, her stature was such that she served as Secretary of State for Culture, further cementing her role as a pillar of Angolan heritage. Her work was not merely artistic; she was deeply involved in social causes, notably participating in the 1996 'So Why' project for the International Red Cross Committee, which aimed to support victims of civil war.
The late 1990s brought a flurry of recognition for her decades of contribution. In 1997, she was honored at the Sun City festival in South Africa as 'the Most Powerful of the Angolan music' and named 'The Best Female Voice of Angolan music' by the National Radio of Angola. Beyond these accolades, she received numerous government and cultural diplomas, including recognition during the 420th anniversary of Luanda's foundation. When she passed away from typhoid fever in 2006, her funeral was attended by the President of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, underscoring her status as a national treasure whose voice transcended borders and political divides.
