In short: The Marcha Real has survived centuries of political upheaval, yet it remains stubbornly wordless. Despite numerous attempts to impose verses—ranging from royal tributes to ideological propaganda—every effort to provide the anthem with an official voice has failed, leaving the melody to stand entirely on its own.

First documented in 1761 as the Marcha Granadera, the anthem was originally a military fife and drum call composed by Manuel de Espinosa de los Monteros. King Charles III declared it the official Honor March in 1770, cementing its role in public life. Over the following centuries, it became a canvas for political myth-making; in the 19th century, a persistent, though spurious, legend claimed it was a gift from Frederick II of Prussia to a Spanish count.

The anthem’s lack of lyrics is not for a lack of trying. In 1870, General Juan Prim launched a national contest to find an official anthem, but the jury ultimately concluded that the existing Marcha Granadera was already the de facto choice. Later, during the 20th century, various unofficial lyrics emerged, including versions adapted for the Francoist regime that were eventually abandoned in 1978. A 2007 attempt by the Spanish Olympic Committee to commission new lyrics also collapsed under public criticism, reinforcing the anthem's wordless status.

Today, the anthem is strictly regulated by Royal Decree 1560/1997, which established a symphonic version by Francisco Grau. This version is set in B-flat major at 76 bpm with a specific AABB structure. To avoid legal complications regarding copyright, the Spanish government purchased the rights to the previous official version from the estate of composer Bartolomé Pérez Casas for 130 million pesetas, or 781,316 euros. While the state now holds rights to the current arrangement, the anthem remains a purely instrumental symbol of the nation.
