In short: Marty Balin founded Jefferson Airplane, yet his melodic, pop-oriented songwriting often stood in stark contrast to the band's experimental psychedelic sound. From the heights of Woodstock to the internal friction of the late sixties, Balin navigated a complex career defined by creative tension, sudden departures, and a lifelong pursuit of artistic expression.

Born Martyn Jerel Buchwald in 1942, Balin began his career in the early sixties before establishing The Matrix, a San Francisco club that served as the launchpad for Jefferson Airplane. As a primary founder, he acted as a lead vocalist and songwriter from 1965 to 1971. While the band became synonymous with the psychedelic rock movement, Balin’s contributions—such as the folk-rock ballad 'Comin' Back to Me'—often leaned toward a romantic, pop-oriented sensibility. Over time, his influence within the group shifted as bandmates like Grace Slick and Paul Kantner matured as writers, leading to creative friction.

The late sixties brought both immense fame and personal disillusionment. Balin performed at landmark events like the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the 1969 Woodstock Festival, but the dark atmosphere of the era, exacerbated by rampant drug use and the death of Janis Joplin, led him to distance himself from the band. After being knocked unconscious by Hells Angels at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert, he formally departed in 1971, citing a desire to focus on health and yoga rather than the constrictive environment of the rock scene.

Balin’s career saw a resurgence in 1975 when he joined Jefferson Starship, contributing to four top-20 hits including the No. 3 single 'Miracles'. Despite this success, he remained prone to abrupt exits, leaving the group in 1978. His later years were marked by solo projects, a 1989 reunion with Jefferson Airplane, and a dedicated focus on painting. Following a 2016 health crisis involving open-heart surgery, Balin passed away in 2018 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a pivotal figure in the evolution of Bay Area rock.
