Beyond the Jackson 5: The multifaceted life of Marlon Jackson
In short: While world-famous as a member of the Jackson 5, Marlon Jackson’s journey extends far beyond the stage. From navigating the complexities of the music industry and real estate to founding peace-focused organizations and advocating for his family’s legacy, Marlon has carved a distinct path in both entertainment and philanthropy.
Born in Gary, Indiana, in 1957, Marlon Jackson was the sixth child of Joseph and Katherine Jackson. He grew up closely bonded with his younger brother, Michael, whom he viewed as a surrogate for their twin brother, Brandon, who died shortly after birth. By 1964, Marlon joined his brothers Tito, Jackie, and Jermaine to form the Jackson 5. Under their father’s strict guidance, the group honed their craft, eventually signing with Steeltown Records in 1967 and later Motown Records in 1969. Marlon provided background vocals and played percussion, including the conga and tambourine, as the group rose to international prominence.
The group’s career was marked by significant transitions. In 1975, seeking better royalties and creative control, the brothers left Motown for Epic Records. Because Berry Gordy had trademarked the name 'The Jackson Five,' they rebranded as 'The Jacksons.' Marlon’s own musical output included a 1987 solo album, 'Baby Tonight,' which reached No. 22 on the U.S. Top R&B Albums chart. Beyond music, he found success in Southern California real estate and co-founded the Black Family Channel, which operated until its sale in 2007. He also established the Motherland Group LLC in 2008 to promote tourism and education in Badagry, Nigeria.
In recent decades, Marlon has focused heavily on humanitarian efforts. He founded the Study Peace Foundation in 2015 to foster unity and peaceful environments for all ages, partnering with KABOOM! to build playgrounds in cities like New Orleans and Gary. Throughout his life, he has remained a steadfast defender of his family. Following Michael’s death in 2009, he served as a pallbearer and delivered a poignant eulogy. Later, in a 2019 interview, he vocally challenged allegations against his brother, dismissing them as character slander and attempts at financial gain, asserting that the claims lacked any corroborating facts.
